choosing between a real or fake christmas tree can be difficult when getting ready to decorate for the holidays. as someone who has had (and loved) both, i personally struggled when trying to decide this year too. because of my recent move, i no longer have the old reliable fake tree i put up in my apartment every year. since going back and forth on what i wanted to do this year was stressing me out so much, to the point that i literally felt thee need to write out a list of pros and cons.. so i figured.. why not share it with you guys too! there’s only a few, but it might help when you just can’t seem to decide what to do!!
real christmas trees
pros |
cons |
smell so good – real christmas trees are always nice to have because they bring such a fresh and pine-y like scent to your home, how could you not love it? | messy – bringing a real christmas tree in your house can leave a real mess. not to mention the constant vacuuming you have to do every time loose pines fall on the floor. |
tradition – if your family is anything like mine going to find the perfect christmas tree is a holiday tradition. its the one tradition no one ever wants to miss! | kinda pricey – having to buy a new tree every year can add up quickly. with a fake tree, you make one purchase (that is typically under $125) and you’re good to go for years. |
already perfect – unlike fake ones, christmas trees are ready to go as soon as you get it in the stand. you don’t have to worry about bending and shaping the “branches” to make it look good. | unwanted bugs – as nice as a real tree is, it’s very common for them to bring bugs into your home. although they aren’t usually harmful ,they can infest other plants you have inside. |
purifies the air – similar to house plants, real christmas trees release fresh oxygen in the air.. you definitely wont get that luxury with a fake one. | they need water – if you aren’t already a plant owner, you may often forget to water your tree. |
fake christmas trees
pros |
cons |
low maintenance – unlike real christmas trees, fake trees require no work at all. you don’t have to water them or sweep up loose pins that have fallen. | it could look fake – when buying artificial trees its important to get a tree thats such good quality it could pass for real. some fake trees aren’t made well and can look as artificial as they are. |
budget friendly – fake trees are one and done, the can be reused for year. whereas with real christmas trees, you are required to purchase a new one every time the holidays roll around. | space – once the holidays are over your tree gets stored in a box to be placed in free space that you may or may not always have. |
can be bought pre-lit – this is another reason fake trees are so budget friendly, because if you buy one that is already lit, you aren’t forced to spend extra on string lights. | can look the same – real christmas trees come in all shapes and sizes so your tree will always be unique. fake trees are great, but they can become very stale after looking the exact same every year. |
variety – there are so many types of artificial christimas trees. if you want a colored one, short one, tall one, one thats already lit, or it has frosted frosted tips – you want it? you got it! | not environmental friendly – sadly, when tossed out fake trees are dumped in a landfill. buttt, if you’re a creative person you may be able to find ways to repurpose parts of the tree. |
